Program Details

Residents work independently on proposed projects or research and come together for meals as well as conversations, presentations and / or practices throughout the week. 

To further the interdisciplinary exchange that is at the core of our work, residents share their work or practice at various points throughout their stay. This includes brief resident presentations the first weeks; a required short workshop, class or presentation open to the public during the fourth week; and an open house the last weekend of the residency. 

Our residency is bilingual — everything is translated in English and Spanish but we ask that  ALL international residents arrive with a minimal knowledge of Spanish.

We are less focused on residents’ capability to produce or execute, and more so on the thoughtful process and purpose from which they are doing so.  

 Our residents include social & cultural workers, fine artists, writers & journalists, musicians & performance artists, arts administrators, architects & designers, researchers, students, educators and others. 

Applicants are encouraged to consider (both on application and during their stay) their role and responsibility as an artist or researcher learning and creating in a new location.

    • Housing (for non-local residents)

  • Residents are housed in private apartments within a large Oaxacan home. Each space is of a different size and offers slightly different amenities which may be more or less beneficial to areas of work / study. We offer these brief descriptions to better understand which amenities might be of particular importance to each resident but do not guarantee any room requests.

    • el pochote is situated on the west side of the courtyard. It has a bedroom with a separate dining / kitchen area and a small work table. It has is a private bathroom and simple kitchen. This is recommended for those who would like a little more living or work space.

    • la voladora is on the roof and opens onto the terrace. It is a single room with a private bathroom, small desk and beautiful view. It has a camping stove and small fridge. This is recommended for writers and researchers who do not need a large space for movement or creation.

    • la cocinera is a private bedroom situated on the east side of the courtyard, connecting to a private bathroom as well as a full kitchen shared with la guadalupe.

    • la guadalupe is a large spacious private bedroom with high ceilings situated on the east side of the courtyard. It shares a full kitchen with la cocinera and has a shared bath slightly outside the room.

    At this time, due to the communal nature of the living situation, we cannot house families or applicants traveling with their children. If you would like to travel with a partner or your family, please contact us for options.

  • Residents eat communal meals of delicious local foods sourced from the nearby market and cooked by our team member Aurelia. Meals include breakfast Monday- Friday, and lunch (which is the main meal) on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Each resident has access to a kitchen or kitchenette.

  • We offer sliding scale fees to all accepted residents.

    The actual cost of each residency is $500 per week but we are able to offer sliding scale fees beginning at $200 week for each resident. Upon selection, we ask for a written confirmation and 50% deposit to confirm your residency space.

    Our residency fees cover minimal program costs and support for local artists and public programs. We ask you to pay what you are able. Our sliding scale fees are offered in lieu of partial scholarships to select residents. We are happy to offer payment plans for all accepted residents.

    **Local residents receive a full scholarship and a stipend for their participation.

  • We encourage innovative and varying interests, projects and research topics.

    Due to the high number of applications, we can not provide feedback on individual applications.
